Nursery
Reading in Nursery is an essential part of our children’s development. The children have a number of class stories each day which are usually linked to the topic we are learning about.
We also encourage children to use our reading corner. Through the use of puppets, prompts and dressing up children's speech and language is strengthened and their imagination allowed to deepen at every level.
We teach the children to read the story using the pictures and their imagination. The best stories are those made up by the children as they explore different books and rhymes, developing their vocabulary with new and exciting words.
We give the children opportunities to explore the beginning, middle and end of their stories as well as to talk about the author and the illustrator. As a class we retell our favourite stories using actions and songs so that we can recall them.
Children in Nursery choose a book they would like to take home and share with their grown up.
We begin to teach phonics in Nursery exploring sounds through phase 1 teaching. When children are ready they are exposed to initial sounds and blending and segmenting preparing them for Phase 2 teaching in Reception.
